Architecture Design Project [ARC60108] focuses on developing awareness in the mediation between socio-cultural needs, the desires of internalspaces and the demands of external constraints pertaining to the broad theme of ‘sustaining humanities’

This final semester forms the culmination of the Bachelor of Science (Hons) Architecture programme. This capstone project is based on the theme of architecture with a social impact and the resolution and integration of technology, environment and cultural context in architectural design. Progressing from the urban issues of urban street environment, the design studio extends students development of architectural position and design brief in proposing the strategy to improving conditions of the urban landscape focused on strengthening and empowering people’s appreciation of own culture and arts. Located in an urban area, students are to further develop the assigned site, into a place of interaction and connection of people, place, time and culture. Subsequently, students are to produce detailed design supported with a comprehensive design report. The design is to show evidence of structural understanding and use of the most appropriate building construction methods, building systems, and services.

PROJECT ONE (A)

PRE-DESIGN ANALYSIS

Students are to further develop the studio design project and position in architecture. You should begin with considering a position/topic in architectural design that you would like to explore, guided by your supervisor. Based on that, students are required to conduct and present the following pre-design analysis:

1. Studies of the contextual conditions of your site

2. Studies on your selected user group and building types

3. Studies on precedents that inform the ideas/approach/strategies underlying your design.

 

Based on your pre-design phase, develop a simple design brief that includes: the topic of exploration, the building type, the user group, the schedule of accommodation. Pre-design analysis, Is where students will assemble all the parts and pieces of the bigger picture.

1. Reviewing building code and local or city ordinance,

2. Initiative on establishing design parameters,

3. Take initiative consider and study solar analysis and other site specific analysis,

4. Research on precedents or do actual visitation to projects related and directly relevant to the proposal and

5. Research on demography, user profile and understanding who we are designing for.

 

There are several guidelines that provide the scope of your proposed project as follows:

  •  3-5 stories/levels

  •  1800-2000 sq.mts. built up area (gross floor area)

  •  No residential proposals (Housing project) and No repetition of previous design studio projects.

  •  Parking lot/layout (based on Uniform Building By-Laws and Local requirements).

  •  Compliance with city planning or local guidelines and requirements.

  •  Shall tackle and address the issue on site and look forward to aligning design addressing the needs of the Asian cities of the future.

DETAILED DESIGN 

In addition to students ability to develop their own position in developing their individual project within the theme of ‘sustaining humanities’- architecture for people, place and time, one key aspect of the design project is to develop holistic and integrated aspects of technology, environment and cultural context in architectural design.

 

Subsequent to Phase 2: Design Strategy and Schematic Design phase, students are required to further develop scheme with the incorporation of environmental strategies and technological resolutions. The intention of integrating the E&T aspect is to strengthen design on the aspect of sustainability and buildability. Student will have additional guidance from their E&T tutor who will look into improving the green and sustainability component, suggesting on passive cooling techniques and technological innovations. The studies will be included in a 5000 word comprehensive design report.

Key Requirements

  •  To consolidate an understanding of the holistic nature of the architectural design process, to a given degree of detail, with emphasis on design as an integrative process, drawing as appropriate on previous subjects of the program.

  •  Produce design development drawings for a selected portion of design with a suitable level of complexity

  •  Design with considerations of building performance (thermal comfort, acoustic and lighting), regulatory frameworks, and health and safety considerations.

  •  Produce drawings (both 2D and 3D), modelling, verbal presentation and a design report to communicate and visualize architectural design and ideas.
