BUILDING CONSTRUCTION 1
Building Construction 1 (BLD60303) intends to develop the understanding of principles and practices of construction technology in relation to site, plants, mechanics, building envelope, building components, "below ground", foundation, "on ground", floor and staircases, beams and columns, walls and openings, and "above ground", roof and ceiling.
Project 1: EXPERIENCING, DOCUMENTING AND ANALYSING THE CONSTRUCTION PROCESS
The objectives of this project are to introduce basic principles and procedures of construction process through real-life project experiential learning and the sequence and coordination of construction at site. This project also exposes us to construction technology or methods responding to site context. It also allows us to demonstrate our understanding and knowledge of construction, material and technology to produce manual sketches, drawings and detailing relating to the existing construction.
In a group of 8, we are required conduct a site visit to an on-going construction project to observe and analyse the process and components of a construction work. We are then required to produce a complete set of documentation (pictures, sketches and drawing) and an analysis of construction elements which shows our understanding and explain the construction elements and its components. Our findings are to be compiled in an A3 report. We are to understand current construction technology on local construction sites and explain current material and technology in relevance to the present construction industry.

FINAL A3 REPORT

REFLECTION :
Through this assignment, I learnt the production of complete documentation and an analysis of construction elements. By looking at the real-life projects with my own eyes, I am able to understand the principles and details of construction work in depth. I am able to identify and analyse the sequence of construction activities and the machines that were utilised at that specific site because the construction techniques may vary depending on the condition of the site and nature of project. Furthermore, I have a understanding of the importance of construction detailing and was exposed to explaining current material and technology to relate to the present construction industry via proper diagrams, pictures and explanatory captions.
This project is a continuation of the first project - an integrated project where it involves construction detailing solution for Project 2b in Architecture Studio 2. This project is designed to allow the demonstration of knowledge and understanding of construction and application from prior project.
Emphasis in producing related manual construction drawing for STEEL and/or TIMBER detail and specification. Technical knowledge is viewed as something separate from design. One of the aims of this assignment is to develop an awareness and understanding of the strong interrelationship between these two areas of study. Critical success of any design project relies on a designer’s ability to address issues of appropriate methods of construction, integration of structure and the selection of materials whilst addressing the many other complex issues that are part of the design process. This assignment will enable us to develop and demonstrate some knowledge of construction, materials and structural theory in a small scale design project.
The task at hand is to submit a A2 presentation sheet explaining design and three architectural and structural details for selected elements and or parts of the designed building.

FINAL SUBMISSION

REFLECTION :
Through this assignment, I have an understanding of the structural elements in construction and its
application in the construction industry. Also, I learnt to apply suitable construction elements, materials and detail/joint solutions to suit to my individual design. I learnt that it is important to take in site considerations and how the building is constructed in response to practicability and problem-solving. Moreover, my critical thinking skills were also exercised I had to allow my design to be able to function and not based on aesthetic purpose on paper. Therefore, I learnt to apply the knowledge of construction process, materials and technology into realising my project. I understood that manual drawings, detailing, and sketches were important to convey efficiently on how my design can be constructed in real-life as these would be read by engineers and other construction authorities.
