ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
This module introduces students to environmental issues and provides some in-depth understanding
of the complexities and interactions that the design and construction professions have to deal with to
contain some of the irreversible damage that human settlement causes to the environment. Modules
also intend to instill basic ecological literacy and environmental concerns through projects that
involves local environment and society
The objectives of this assignment are as follows:
1. To increase awareness of current environmental issues locally
2. To induce creativity in attempting to explore the current environmental circumstances
3. To allow students to explore the opportunity to work with the community and for the community
4. To create awareness of the importance of creating and environmentally sustainable product/design/services
5. To be able to understand and explain the principles of sustainability from environmental and social
perspective
Our task is to identify an environmental-community related issue in our local community. The issues have to be genuine and any solution provided by our team must have an impact to the environment and community. We will need to visit our project site more then once to collect a variety of observation before making suggestions or proposals.
Our observations should also include what is the main environmental-community related issue, who are affected,
any particular organization directly related to the issue, what the people or community needs and etc.

We have chosen an Orphanage in Klang, Grace Community Service as the community. On the 20th of September 2016, we made our first visit to the children's home and analysed the problem faced by the home. We then came out with the solution after discussing among ourselves and every group has to make a proposal to be approved by our respective tutors.

REFLECTION :
Through this group project, I believe the awareness of current environmental issues are introduced and increased among us. Besides that, we also have the opportunity to induce creativity to solve the problem faced by the community. It also create awareness of the importance of creating an environmentally sustainable product, design and services. We are now able to understand and the explain the principles of sustainability from environmental and social perspective. Furthermore, I also realised that careful and thorough planning is important because we may waste the materials and this in turn will harm the environment. But through cooperation among group members, guidance from lecturers and support for the community, we managed to come up with a sustainable design that helps the community and also give back to the environment by recycling materials such as wooden pallets to give them a new life instead of throwing them away.This project allowed me to understand the life-cycle of a product through: obtaining the material(which are the unused wooden pallets), hands-on experience on wood-working, and presenting the final product to the client. Their happy faces said it all. All in all, though tiring, this project proved to be satisfying and beneficial to all as we helped save the environment and a community in need.
