ARCHITECTURE CULTURE & HISTORY 2

This is a module is a continuous module of Architectural Culture and History 1. It is a module for us to conduct a chronological survey of the developments of Western architecture from the beginning of time to the period of Enlightenment, with consideration of the intellectual, aesthetic, technological, political and economic factors which have influenced the design of buildings. These issues are explored with reference to major contemporary examples and the work and philosophy of significant exponents.

PROJECT ONE

Project 1: Timeline and Diagram Analysis

PROJECT BRIEF

For the first project, it is a group assignment of which our tutorial group have to choose a few buildings in Petaling Jaya area which were built in the 1960-70's(post-independence period) and had influences of Modernist architecture. The purpose of the project is for us to undertake a research analysis process on Modern Malaysian architecture practices. Throughout history through literature review and document analysis and present an appropriate chronology account of the Malaysian architecture based on the understanding gained through the analysis procedure.

This project also helps us to familiarise with the activities of culmination and production of a research analysis through assemblage, chronologically indices and evaluation of information; composing and organization of study; assembly of illustration and text; design layout composition; poster and presentation.

We are required to produce an A3 timeline which included precedent studies and architectural style analysis of the selected buildings. My group selected: MBPJ Civic Centre, Masjid Bulat and National Registration Department.

 REFLECTION :

This assignment allowed me to analyse and discuss the relationship of the Modern Architecture of Malaysia with social, cultural,
environmental and intellectual context of Malaysian architecture post Merdeka/Independence. I am able to identify and provide an overall understanding of the circulation, the hierarchy of spaces and the organisation of form and space of the building after analysing. Besides that, I am able to differentiate the way in which many varied factors contribute to the development of Modern Malaysian Architecture and produce, illustratively, orally and in text, a critical chronology analysis interpretation of Modern Malaysian architecture. The timeline poster with introduction and diagrammatic analysis of buildings proved to be a more interesting and interactive way to be informed about the buildings built in this era and region.

PROJECT TWO

Project 2: Report (Group & Individual)

PROJECT BRIEF

In a group of 5, we are to conduct a research and architectural analysis on a selected building around Klang Valley.  Our group chosen Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka as our topic. We are to refine our reseach and the informations we gained into introduction, site context analysis, architectural style analysis, architectural layout analysis, building construction, structure and materials analysis, architectural elements or components analysis and conclusion. Then we are to publish our research as a web book as an academic material.

FINAL REPORT

 REFLECTION :

Through this project, I am now able to produce a research analysis process on Modern Malaysian architecture practices throughout history. While conducting research, I learnt to analyze the basic principles of form, space and order in architectural design and translate them into diagrams based on their organization of form, space, circulation and paths-space relationship, axis and relations of axes, massing and etc. The diagrammatic explanations helped in explaining the information visually. I have also gained insight on understanding the principles, ideas and contributing factors of Modern Architecture in Klang Valley. I realised style of architecture has changed from a detailed and ornamental-focused movement to a simple, dull and sustainable modern style. Times and economy has influenced the style of buildings and how it affects the environment as nowadays, designers prioritize sustainability, budget-cost and client-needs more than anything.  I have understood that Modern architecture style became a turning point for a more sustainable future in construction design as materials, and advanced construction technologies were developed at this time.  All in all, this assignment allowed me to know more about Malaysian Modern architecture and document down the architectural heritage in the form of writings, descriptive diagrams and photography.
